US: Sakhalin-2 authorization issued through December 18
The U.S. Treasury Department has extended Japan’s authorization to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Sakhalin-2 project in Russia until December 18, 2026. This decision, announced on June 11, 2026, allows Japanese companies such as Mitsui and Mitsubishi, which hold stakes in the project, to continue their operations without immediate disruption. The extension was widely anticipated, as Japanese officials had expressed concerns that the Trump administration might not renew the waiver.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara welcomed the decision, emphasizing its importance for maintaining stable LNG supplies in Japan. The Sakhalin-2 project accounts for approximately 10% of Japan’s LNG imports, making it a critical component of the country’s energy strategy. Despite U.S. pressure to reduce reliance on Russian energy, Japan has maintained that its participation in the project is necessary for energy security.
The U.S. has long sought to limit Russian energy exports through sanctions, but the extension reflects a pragmatic approach to balancing geopolitical goals with the energy needs of key allies.
