China Mineral Resources chairman meets Zimbabwe mines minister

China Mineral Resources chairman recently met with Zimbabwe’s Mines and Mining Development Minister to discuss expanding cooperation in the mining sector, reflecting ongoing efforts to deepen bilateral ties in mineral extraction and processing. Zimbabwe, rich in lithium and other critical minerals, has seen a significant increase in Chinese investment, with controlling approximately 90% of the country’s mining operations, including key lithium assets vital to global energy supply chains. This collaboration has raised concerns over environmental degradation, labor rights violations, and governance challenges. Investigations have highlighted widespread issues, including unsafe working conditions, and incidents of physical abuse in Chinese-operated mines. Environmental damage, such as water contamination and soil depletion, has also been reported, with local communities bearing the brunt of these impacts. Despite these challenges, the Zimbabwean government has not yet imposed significant restrictions on Chinese mining activities, though it has halted lithium concentrate exports ahead of schedule in response to regulatory failures. The U.S. Select Committee on China has called for stronger accountability measures and alternative investment models to address these concerns. As the global demand for critical minerals continues to rise, the future of Zimbabwe’s mining sector will depend on balancing economic growth with sustainable and ethical practices.
