US says it shot down four Iranian drones launched toward Strait of Hormuz

The U.S. military reported on Friday that it shot down four Iranian drones launched toward the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route for oil and natural gas. The action was taken after the drones were deemed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic, according to U.S. Central Command. In response, the U.S. military also struck several of Iran’s coastal surveillance radar sites. This exchange marks the latest escalation in a series of reciprocal attacks between the two nations, which have strained the tenuous ceasefire in place since April 8.

The Strait of Hormuz has been a focal point of recent tensions, with Iran effectively closing the corridor to international shipping since the start of hostilities with the U.S. and Israel in late February. Washington has enforced a blockade on Iranian ports since April 13, halting six vessels it claims were attempting to violate the restrictions. The U.S. military has also conducted self-defense strikes on Qeshm Island, a strategic location in the strait, targeting an Iranian military ground control station.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for launching the drones and has accused the U.S. of violating the ceasefire by targeting Iranian oil tankers and coastal areas. U.S. Central Command has denied these claims, asserting all Iranian attacks failed. The ongoing conflict has raised concerns about the stability of global energy markets, with energy prices already volatile due to the strategic chokehold on the strait.

Efforts to negotiate a more permanent resolution to the conflict have stalled, with both sides maintaining rigid positions. The U.S. has proposed a 14-point memorandum of understanding, which Iran is reportedly considering through Pakistani mediators. However, Iranian lawmakers have dismissed the proposal as insufficient, and tensions remain high. The recent drone incident underscores the fragility of the current ceasefire and highlights the potential for further military escalation in the region.
