Inpex executive: An updated offer is being prepared, following continued interest-based bargaining
Following ongoing interest-based bargaining facilitated by Australia’s Fair Work Commission, Inpex has indicated that an updated offer is being prepared to resolve the industrial dispute at its Ichthys LNG facility in Darwin. The company continues to engage in negotiations with the Offshore Alliance, a union representing workers at the facility, which supplies liquefied natural gas to Japan, Australia’s largest LNG export market.
The dispute, which initially saw planned strike action from May 27 to June 10, was temporarily suspended as progress was made in bargaining. However, tensions resurfaced in late May, with workers voting to extend stoppages from four to eight hours per day, significantly disrupting operations and export schedules. The escalation has raised concerns about potential supply disruptions amid a global energy crisis and increased demand in Australia’s domestic market.
Inpex has emphasized its commitment to reaching a fair and equitable agreement with employees, while unions continue to push for improved pay and working conditions. The outcome of these negotiations will have important implications for the stability of LNG exports and the broader energy market.
