IATA says airline industry-wide revenue forecast at $1.165 trillion in 2026, up from $1.065 trillion in 2025

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its latest financial outlook for the global airline industry, projecting industry-wide revenue of $1.053 trillion in 2026, up 4.5% from $1.008 trillion in 2025. This growth is driven by strong passenger demand and record-high load factors, with airlines expected to fill 83.8% of all seats in 2026. Passenger ticket revenues are forecast to reach $751 billion in 2026, a 4.8% increase from $716 billion in 2025. Ancillary and other revenues are also expected to rise by 5.5%, reaching $145 billion.

Cargo revenue is projected to grow more modestly, reaching $158 billion in 2026, up 2.1% from $155 billion in 2025. This growth is supported by continued demand for time-sensitive shipments and e-commerce, despite a broader slowdown in global trade.

Despite rising costs from supply chain bottlenecks, geopolitical tensions, and regulatory burdens, the airline industry is expected to maintain a net profit margin of 3.9%, with a combined net profit of $41 billion in 2026. This represents a slight increase from $39.5 billion in 2025. Operating profit is also expected to rise to $72.8 billion in 2026, with a net operating margin of 6.9%.

Fuel costs are anticipated to decline slightly to $252 billion in 2026, while non-fuel costs are expected to rise to $729 billion, driven by labor and maintenance expenses. The return on invested capital (ROIC) is forecast to remain at 6.8%, below the estimated weighted average cost of capital (WACC) of 8.2%.

Regional performance varies, with the Middle East leading in net profit margin and profit per passenger, followed by Europe and Asia Pacific. North American airlines are expected to maintain stable profitability, while African and Latin American carriers face challenges related to high operating costs and economic volatility.

Overall, the airline industry is demonstrating resilience in the face of ongoing challenges, with strong demand and operational efficiency helping to offset rising costs and regulatory pressures.
