Iraq's Rumaila field output currently at 350k b/d: Basra Oil
Iraq's Rumaila Oil Field, one of the largest in the world, is currently producing at a rate of 350,000 barrels per day (b/d), according to recent statements from Basra Oil Company. This marks a notable decline from its 2022 production level of 1.421 million b/d, which accounted for 30% of Iraq's total oil output at the time. The field, which has been a cornerstone of Iraq's oil production since its discovery in 1953, has seen fluctuations in output due to historical underinvestment, infrastructure challenges, and geopolitical factors.
The Rumaila field is operated by the Rumaila Operating Organization (ROO), with Basra Energy Company Ltd (BECL)—a joint venture between BP and PetroChina—serving as the lead contractor under a Technical Services Contract that extends until 2034 [5]. Despite recent production challenges, the field remains a critical asset for Iraq, holding an estimated 17 billion barrels of oil in place, with current reserves standing at 17 billion barrels as of 2022.
Efforts to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact have been ongoing, including a significant reduction in gas flaring by over 65% since 2016. However, the field continues to face scrutiny over its environmental and health impacts, particularly in nearby communities where pollution-related health concerns persist. The current production level of 350,000 b/d reflects ongoing operational adjustments and potential constraints in the field's infrastructure and resource management.
