'State of Silence': “This Is a Documentary That Shouldn’t Exist, But It Does…” -Diego Luna, Executive Producer
Available on Netflix in Latin America and the US beginning October 17
State of Silence explores the challenges of freedom of the press in Mexico from the perspective of four journalists who courageously face them. Through their personal accounts and appearances by other well-known media professionals, the risks they face in reporting the truth are addressed.
The documentary premiered this year at prestigious film festivals around the world, including the Sheffield Film Festival (UK), Tribeca International Film Festival (USA) and the Guadalajara International Film Festival (Mexico), among others. It also won Best Feature Film at the Santiago International Film Festival (Chile).
From director Santiago Maza (Reasonable Doubt), producer Abril López (Things We Dare Not Do) and executive producer Diego Luna (César Chavez, Narcos: México), the documentary follows the testimonies of four journalists from different states in Mexico (María de Jesús Peters, Juan de Dios García, Marcos Vizcarra, and Jesús Medina) and explores their lives after receiving threats for reporting the truth.
