Pakistan PM expects finalization of US-Iran deal within 24 hrs
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed optimism that a final agreement between the United States and Iran will be reached within 24 hours, as diplomatic efforts continue in Islamabad. The talks, mediated by Pakistan, aim to solidify a ceasefire and lay the groundwork for a broader peace deal between the two nations, which have been engaged in hostilities since February 2026. However, Iran has yet to confirm its participation in direct negotiations with U.S. representatives, casting uncertainty over the timeline.
The U.S. delegation, led by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is expected to arrive in Islamabad, though Vice President JD Vance has reportedly opted not to travel due to security concerns. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also in the city, but Tehran has maintained that no direct talks are planned.
A key point of contention remains the U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has condemned as a violation of the ceasefire agreement and international law. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaie has accused the U.S. of undermining the truce, citing recent incidents such as seizure of an Iranian cargo ship by the U.S. military.
Despite these tensions, Pakistan has been working to facilitate dialogue, with Prime Minister Sharif recently engaging in high-level discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other regional leaders. The goal is to extend the current ceasefire and establish a framework for a more permanent resolution to the conflict.
The outcome of these talks could have significant implications for regional stability and global energy markets, particularly given the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Crude oil prices have already risen above $105 a barrel amid concerns over potential disruptions to shipping and trade.
While a final agreement remains elusive, both sides have signaled a willingness to continue negotiations. A limited understanding—such as a temporary ceasefire extension—could serve as a stepping stone toward a broader resolution. However, analysts caution that any deal will require addressing core issues, including Iran’s nuclear program and U.S. demands for regional security guarantees.
