TCS exec: Co will have equal number of AI agents and employees soon

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of India’s largest IT services firms, is preparing for a significant shift in its workforce structure. According to N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, TCS could have as many AI agents as human employees within the next three years. This statement was made during the company’s 31st AGM.

Chandrasekaran emphasized that AI is not a threat to the IT industry but rather a transformative opportunity. He noted that AI is evolving into an infrastructure of intelligence, enabling businesses to automate processes, enhance decision-making, and improve customer interactions. TCS has already made substantial progress in this area, with an annualized AI revenue run-rate of $2.4 billion in the last quarter of fiscal 2026, growing at 22.4% quarterly.

To prepare its workforce for this transition, TCS has launched an extensive upskilling initiative. By the end of fiscal 2024, the company had reskilled over 300,000 employees in AI and machine learning. Today, more than 570,000 of TCS’s 600,000 employees are considered AI-ready, with many achieving deep expertise through immersive learning programs.

The company’s approach includes a mix of foundational and role-specific AI training, delivered through both internal platforms and partnerships like LinkedIn Learning. TCS ensures that AI learning is accessible, relevant, and tailored to individual roles and proficiency levels. This strategy has led to high engagement, with over 60% of TCS employees opting for AI-related courses.

Chandrasekaran also highlighted five key opportunities for growth in the AI era, including modernizing legacy systems, redesigning business processes, managing AI governance, sovereign AI, and physical AI applications. He noted that enterprises globally expect increased technology spending over the next two years, driven largely by AI adoption.

As TCS moves toward a future where AI agents and human employees operate side by side, the company is positioning itself to lead in the AI-driven enterprise IT market, which is projected to grow from $1.6 trillion to $3 trillion over the next decade.
