Netflix’s video podcast ambitions may extend beyond its recent deal with Spotify. A new report from Bloomberg suggests Netflix is preparing to create original video podcasts exclusive to its streaming service as well.
The streaming giant has reportedly contacted talent to create the new shows and plans to update the layout of its mobile app to help users find the video podcasts. Last month, Netflix struck a deal with Spotify to add 16 video podcasts to its platform, and Bloomberg reports that it has held talks to license other shows from iHeartMedia and SiriusXM, too.
Netflix is looking to license the shows for just one year, with some deals worth less than $10 million, as the company determines whether there’s a place for podcasts on its streaming service, Bloomberg reports.
More services are getting in on the video podcasting trend as YouTube continues to top the list of the most popular places to listen to — and watch — podcasts. Spotify brought video podcasts to its revamped Apple TV app last week, and even TikTok is partnering with iHeartMedia to launch a series of podcasts, allowing users on TikTok to view clips and highlights.
