South Korea's Lee nominates Han Seong-sook as prime minister
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has nominated Han Seong-sook, the current Minister for Small and Midsize Businesses and Startups, as the country’s next prime minister, announced on June 7, 2026. If confirmed by the National Assembly, Ms. Han would become first female prime minister and only the second woman in the country’s history to hold the position.
Ms. Han brings a strong background in both the technology sector and public administration. She previously served as CEO of Naver, South Korea’s largest internet portal, and has overseen policies for SMEs since 2022. Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik highlighted her experience in leading the country’s AI transformation and ensuring that economic growth benefits a broader segment of the population.
The prime minister’s role in South Korea is largely ceremonial and administrative under the presidential system. However, Ms. Han’s nomination reflects the government’s focus on leveraging AI and digital innovation to drive inclusive economic growth. Her leadership is expected to support the expansion of the startup ecosystem and strengthen the role of SMEs in the national economy.
