Tuesday's big stock stories: What’s likely to move the market in the next trading session

Here's what CNBC TV's producers were watching on Monday and what's on the radar for Tuesday's session. The banks start reporting live on 'Squawk Box' Bank of America is up 11.5% in the three months since last reporting. The stock is 2% from its July high. Citigroup is up 11% in three months, and is 5% from its June 18 high. Goldman Sachs is up 17% in three months. The stock is 7% from a mid-June high. JPMorgan Chase is up 6.7% since its last earnings report, and is 2.6% from its June high. Wells Fargo is up 1% since the last report three months ago. The stock is 10% from a January high. CNBC's Ollie Renick covers the options market. He's reporting that 4.5 times as many calls were bought on Monday on the State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) compared with puts. But on the State Street SPDR S & P Regional Banking ETF (KRE) , there were 4 times as many puts bought compared with calls. Several banking executives will be on CNBC on Tuesday including Bank of America's CEO Brian Moynihan, Wells Fargo CFO Mike Santomassimo, and Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon will on "Halftime Report" at noon. Oil surges Brent and West Texas Intermediate crude oil were both up more than 9% on Monday as Iran continues attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz, breaking the deal negotiated with the United States. The U.S. is hitting back inside Iran again tonight. Brent is back above $80 a barrel. Chevron picked up 3.3% today. The stock is up 8% in a week, and 10% in July. But it's still 15% from its March 30 high. Exxon Mobil was up 4% today. The stock is up 6% in a week, and 6% in July. The stock is 18% from the March 30th high. XOM YTD mountain Exxon Mobil stock year to date Gasoline moving higher The RBOB gasoline futures are up 5% in a week. The average cost of a gallon of regular gasoline across these United States is now back to $3.876. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright will be live on "Closing Bell Overtime" on Tuesday with CNBC's Morgan Brennan. The retail part of the story The State Street SPDR S & P Retail ETF (XRT) is down fractionally in the last week. As gasoline prices rise, the threat of a pullback in retail becomes more of a threat. The XRT is 4.6% from the January high. We'll be watching all day tomorrow on CNBC. Inflation data on the way The consumer price index comes out at 8:30 a.m. ET on "Squawk Box." The Dow Jones consensus estimate calls for 0.2% drop month to month. However, minus food and energy, the consensus sees a 0.2% gain from the prior month. Year-over-year consensus predicts a 3.8% rise in the headline rate. But, strip out food and energy, and the consensus calls for a 2.8% increase from last year. On the prediction market Kalshi, 73% are putting money on the year-over-year CPI data, saying the number will come in above 3.7%. Thirty percent say it'll be above 3.8%. Boeing orders Boeing's June orders and deliveries come out at 11 a.m. ET. CNBC TV's Phil LeBeau will have the details. The stock is down 1.6% since the last delivery data was released a month ago. The stock is 15% from its Jan. 27 high. SK Hynix pulls back We'll keep watching SK Hynix closely tomorrow morning. The South Korean markets will give a good indication of which way the stock is likely to move. Shares went as high as $177 on Friday after trading began. The stock is down to $152 Monday evening — 14% from that high. The iShares MSCI South Korea ETF (EWY) is the ETF that tracks South Korean's market. It is now 24% from its June 18 high; it fell 8.5% today. Apple hits new highs CNBC's "Squawk Box" will take a special look at the stock as it hits a new high. Citi upped its price target on Monday to $365 a share. Shares were up again today, propelling it to another new high. Apple closed at $317.31. Apple is up 9.7% in July and up 22% in three months.
