Saudi Arabia Emphasizes Iraq’s Commitment to Bilateral Agreements, Regional Stability

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has reiterated its expectation that Iraq uphold existing commitments and agreements to strengthen regional cooperation and stability, according to recent diplomatic statements and meetings between the two nations. The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted Saudi Arabia’s role in facilitating high-level diplomatic talks, including recent discussions between the Russian Federation and the United States, as a critical step toward resolving regional and international conflicts.

In a February 2025 statement, Iraq’s Foreign Ministry acknowledged Saudi Arabia’s active role in promoting diplomatic efforts, underscoring the importance of joint action to address shared security and political challenges. This aligns with broader cooperation between the two countries, including a 2020 video conference between Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi and Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman. During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed commitments to expand bilateral ties in energy, trade, and counterterrorism, while approving agreements from the fourth session of the Iraqi-Saudi Coordination Council.

Key agreements include the establishment of a new Arar border crossing, Saudi investment in Iraqi infrastructure projects (such as a sports stadium), and collaboration on oil market stability within OPEC and OPEC Plus frameworks. Saudi Arabia also pledged continued support for Iraq’s post-conflict reconstruction, including medical aid during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recent diplomatic exchanges, including Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faysal’s 2025 discussions with U.S. officials, further emphasized the need for Iraq to maintain political unity and territorial integrity. While Saudi officials declined to comment on Iraq’s internal governance, they stressed the importance of Iraqi-led reconciliation and cooperation to counter cross-border terrorism.

Analysts note that Saudi Arabia’s emphasis on Iraq fulfilling commitments reflects broader regional efforts to stabilize the Middle East amid geopolitical tensions.
