Vestas Secures Firm Order for RWE’s 1,380 MW Norfolk Vanguard West Offshore Wind Project
Vestas, the global leader in wind turbine manufacturing, has confirmed a firm order to supply turbines for the 1,380 MW Norfolk Vanguard West offshore wind project, part of RWE’s broader Norfolk Wind Zone development in the UK. The project, which secured a 20-year Contract for Difference (CfD) at a strike price of £91.20 per MWh in 2024 prices, is now advancing toward construction following RWE’s acquisition of the Norfolk portfolio from Vattenfall in late 2023.
The order includes 92 of Vestas’ V236-15 MW turbines, with the company also contracted to provide long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) services. This agreement builds on prior exclusivity arrangements between Vestas and Vattenfall for Norfolk Vanguard East and Norfolk Boreas projects, which together total 2,760 MW. RWE and Vestas have now formalized the partnership, aligning with RWE’s strategy to expand its UK offshore wind capacity.
RWE’s Norfolk Vanguard West, located 50–80 km off the Norfolk coast, is expected to power approximately 1.3 million UK homes once operational in 2029. The project is part of RWE’s 6.9 GW UK offshore wind portfolio, which includes the Dogger Bank South and Awel y Môr projects. RWE has also partnered with KKR to co-develop Norfolk Vanguard East and West, with KKR acquiring a 50% equity stake in each project.
The transaction underscores the UK’s growing momentum in offshore wind, supported by government CfD auctions and industry collaboration. With Vestas’ turbine supply and O&M services secured, the project advances RWE’s goal of becoming a leading renewable energy provider while contributing to the UK’s net-zero targets.
