Sona NanoTech appoints seasoned biotech commercial executive Michael A. Fleming to board of directors

Sona Nanotech Inc. (CSE: SONA), a nanotechnology company focused on the development of pre-clinical Targeted Hyperthermia Therapy for colorectal cancer, has announced the appointment of Michael A. Fleming to its board of directors. Fleming brings extensive experience in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors, having previously served in leadership roles at prominent organizations. His appointment follows a strategic effort by Sona to strengthen its board with seasoned professionals capable of guiding the company through its development and commercialization phases.

Fleming’s career includes a tenure as president of Sanofi Pasteur Limited, where he played a pivotal role in transforming the company into a billion-dollar enterprise in Canada. Additionally, he has been involved in various advisory and leadership capacities, including co-chairing Canada’s COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force. His expertise in vaccine development, regulatory affairs, and commercial strategy is expected to provide valuable insights as Sona advances its therapeutic pipeline.

The board of directors at Sona Nanotech is composed of a diverse group of leaders with backgrounds in venture capital, biotechnology, and regulatory affairs. Mark Lievonen, who was elected as chair in May 2023, succeeds Jim Megann, who will continue to serve as a director. Lievonen’s extensive experience in the life sciences sector, including his leadership at Sanofi Pasteur, aligns with Sona’s strategic goals of advancing Targeted Hyperthermia Therapy through pre-clinical and clinical stages.

Leonard Pagliaro, PhD, was also recently appointed to the board following Sona’s acquisition of Siva Therapeutics, Inc. Pagliaro’s academic and industry experience in R&D and commercialization adds further depth to the board’s capabilities.

Sona Nanotech’s board has also been recognized for its recent achievements, including the award of a territorial patent in South Korea for its proprietary, toxin-free gold nanorod manufacturing process. Additional patent applications are pending in other major markets.

The company’s CEO, David Regan, emphasized the importance of having a board with the necessary expertise to guide Sona through its development phases. “We are fortunate to have someone with the life sciences credentials and commercial accomplishments of Mark to step into the role of chair as Sona progresses an important advanced medical therapy,” Regan stated.

With the addition of Fleming to its board, Sona Nanotech continues to build a leadership team equipped to navigate the complexities of regulatory approval, clinical trials, and commercialization in the biotechnology sector.
