Amazon to Invest $12 Billion in First Data Center Campuses in Louisiana
Amazon announced plans to invest $12 billion in northwest Louisiana to develop state-of-the-art data center campuses, marking its first such investment in the state. The project spans multiple sites across Caddo and Bossier Parishes and is designed to support cloud computing and AI technologies. The initiative is expected to create 540 full-time jobs directly at the data centers, with an estimated 1,710 additional jobs in the broader community, including roles in engineering, operations, and logistics according to Opportunity Louisiana.
The investment includes $400 million allocated to local water infrastructure, ensuring responsible water usage by prioritizing surplus water for cooling systems. Amazon also pledged $250,000 to establish a community fund managed by nonprofit ChangeX, supporting STEM education, sustainability projects, and local initiatives.
The company emphasized its commitment to funding 100% of energy and utility infrastructure costs, including upgrades to the regional grid managed by Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO). This approach aims to strengthen grid reliability while avoiding ratepayer burden. Additionally, Amazon has invested in solar energy projects in Louisiana, contributing up to 200 MW of carbon-free energy—enough to power 44,000 homes.
Governor Jeff Landry highlighted Louisiana's competitive advantages, including reliable infrastructure and a skilled workforce, as key factors in securing the investment. Amazon's Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, David Zapolsky, noted the project's alignment with the company's long-term goals to support AI innovation and local economic growth.
The development builds on Amazon's existing Louisiana footprint, which includes four fulfillment centers, seven delivery stations, and solar energy investments. Construction is expected to begin soon, with operations launching in phases over several years. The project is projected to generate tens of millions in tax revenue for local governments, supporting public services and infrastructure improvements.
By partnering with STACK Infrastructure, Amazon aims to create 1,500 construction jobs during the development phase, further boosting regional economic activity. The initiative underscores Louisiana's growing role in the U.S. digital infrastructure landscape, with the state securing $90 billion in capital investment since 2022.
