Johnson: Understand Trump will sign housing bill at some point
The U.S. House is expected to pass a bipartisan affordable housing bill on Tuesday night, sending it to President Donald Trump for potential signature as early as Wednesday. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act aims to reduce homebuyer costs and increase housing supply by streamlining regulatory processes and limiting institutional investors purchasing no more than 350 single-family homes. The legislation passed the Senate on Monday with broad support, 85-5, following months of negotiations between the House and Senate to reconcile differing versions of the bill.
Speaker Mike Johnson has indicated that he understands Trump will eventually sign the bill, despite some resistance from conservative members of the House who oppose omission of the SAVE America Act, a separate voter ID proposal. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) has threatened to block procedural moves to fast-track the bill unless the House includes the SAVE Act, but lack of broader support for the voter bill makes her opposition unlikely to prevent passage.
The housing measure has become a key campaign issue for both parties as affordability concerns remain central to the 2026 midterm elections.
