Rezaei says response to any violation of memorandum will be swift and decisive

A senior Iranian official has warned that any violation of the recently signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States will provoke a "swift and decisive" response from Iran. Ebrahim Rezaei, the spokesperson for Iran's Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, emphasized that the Lebanon ceasefire is a "red line" and that Iran will not compromise on this issue during negotiations. The 14-point MoU, signed electronically by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and U.S. President Donald Trump, aims to halt military operations across all fronts and initiate a 60-day period of talks between the two nations.

Rezaei also noted that while Lebanon remains a central issue in any potential agreement, he dismissed the likelihood of immediate normalization of relations between Iran and the United States. Meanwhile, Ebrahim Azizi, head of Iran's parliamentary national security committee, criticized the U.S. for failing to uphold the agreement's first clause, which calls for an "immediate and permanent termination" of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. Azizi warned that continued violations could lead to a "smart and deterrent response" from Iran.

The situation remains tense as both sides continue negotiations over the terms of the MoU, including the unfreezing of approximately $24 billion in Iranian assets abroad. Analysts suggest that the success of the agreement will depend on the U.S. and Iran maintaining their commitments and managing regional tensions, particularly with Israel and its military actions in Lebanon.
