India, Bangladesh reaffirm commitment to peace, tranquility and stability along border - joint statement

India and Bangladesh reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, tranquility, and stability along their shared 4,096-km border during recent high-level discussions. The two nations have long prioritized border security cooperation, with the latest developments underscoring their shared resolve to address cross-border challenges while fostering economic and strategic collaboration.

During the bi-annual Director General-level border talks held in New Delhi, officials from both sides reviewed progress on border fencing, illegal migration, cross-border crimes, smuggling, human trafficking, and drone intrusions. These discussions are part of a broader effort to strengthen bilateral ties and address longstanding concerns along the border. The two countries have also emphasized the importance of effective border management to ensure a crime-free and secure border, with a focus on minimizing civilian casualties and enhancing people-oriented security measures.

India and Bangladesh have demonstrated a consistent commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue and cooperation. For instance, the two nations have worked closely on water-sharing agreements, including the Teesta River and the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty of 1996. A Joint Technical Committee has been established to facilitate discussions on the renewal of the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty and to address water resource management issues.

In addition to security and water resource cooperation, the two countries have expanded their collaboration in trade, energy, and infrastructure. The India-Bangladesh Joint Statement reaffirmed their shared vision for enhancing connectivity, commerce, and collaboration for mutual prosperity. This includes the early operationalization of the BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement, the development of cross-border infrastructure, and the promotion of sub-regional connectivity initiatives.

The two leaders also emphasized the importance of strengthening defense cooperation, including joint military exercises, training, and capability development. India has committed to supporting the modernization of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, further solidifying their strategic partnership.

The recent visit of Bangladesh’s Prime Minister to India in June 2024 highlighted the deepening economic and strategic ties between the two nations. The leaders articulated a shared vision for future-oriented collaboration, including digital and green partnerships, to foster sustainable development and regional prosperity.

As India and Bangladesh continue to work toward a more integrated and cooperative future, their joint efforts to ensure border stability and address shared challenges remain a cornerstone of their bilateral relationship.
