Air China may passenger traffic -2.7%

Air China reported a 2.7% year-on-year decline in passenger traffic for January 2025, according to the latest data from the carrier. The airline transported 13,118.600 thousand passengers during the month, compared to 13,500 thousand in January 2024. This decline follows a broader trend of modest fluctuations in passenger volumes, with the carrier’s traffic peaking at 15,252.000 thousand in August 2024 before declining to lowest point during the pandemic.

Despite the recent dip, Air China has demonstrated resilience in the post-pandemic recovery. The carrier’s domestic passenger traffic has rebounded strongly, with load factors reaching 80.1% in January 2025, reflecting robust demand for domestic travel. Meanwhile, international operations remain a key focus for growth, with the airline expanding its route network and increasing frequencies on high-yield corridors. In 2025, Air China added new international routes and plans to further expand its international capacity in 2026.

The airline’s overall capacity in 2025 was down 0.8% compared to 2024, with a 3.1% reduction in domestic capacity offset by a 12.3% increase in international capacity. This strategic shift reflects Air China’s emphasis on international markets, which offer higher revenue potential and are critical to restoring profitability.

Looking ahead, Air China’s order book of 199 aircraft—comprising 51% Airbus, 46% Comac C919s, and 4% Boeing—positions the airline for long-term growth and fleet modernization. As the carrier continues to navigate evolving market conditions and regulatory developments, its ability to balance capacity adjustments with demand trends will be key to sustaining recovery and improving financial performance.
