Malaysia's AirAsia X: expected operation of Bahrain flight service in August, September, subject to market conditions
AirAsia X, the long-haul budget airline under the Capital A Group, is preparing to launch its Kuala Lumpur-Bahrain-London (KUL-BAH-LGW) route, with operations expected to commence in late June 2026, subject to geopolitical developments in the region. The route, which will be operated using an Airbus A330-900, is part of the airline’s broader strategy to establish Bahrain as its first international hub. The service is designed to connect Southeast Asia with the Middle East and Europe, leveraging Bahrain’s strategic location and aviation infrastructure.
The airline has outlined a tentative schedule, with flights departing Kuala Lumpur at 10:00 PM, arriving in Bahrain between 1:30 AM and 1:55 AM local time, followed by a stopover before continuing to London Gatwick. The return journey is expected to depart London at 10:25 AM, arriving in Bahrain around 9:00 PM local time after a two-hour stopover. The route will operate seasonally until November 30, 2026.
AirAsia X has also introduced introductory fares to incentivize early bookings, with promotional fares starting at RM99 and RM199 for travel to Bahrain and London, respectively. The airline has emphasized its commitment to maintaining affordability and operational efficiency while navigating a challenging global aviation environment, including rising fuel costs and geopolitical uncertainties.
The launch of the KUL-BAH-LGW route is seen as a strategic move to enhance Bahrain’s role as a regional aviation and logistics hub, with potential economic benefits for the country, including job creation and increased tourism. However, the airline has also outlined contingency plans, including a potential shift to Istanbul if Bahrain’s airspace remains restricted beyond June.
