Emirates head says UK should renationalize Heathrow: FT

Emirates President Sir Tim Clark has criticized Heathrow Airport's management, calling for the resignation of its CEO, John Holland-Kaye, over the airport’s handling of capacity restrictions and staffing challenges. The dispute has intensified following Holland-Kaye’s suggestion that flight caps could be reintroduced later in the year to manage potential disruptions during the Christmas period. Clark described such remarks as “inexcusable” and stated that Holland-Kaye is the wrong guy.

The issue stems from Heathrow’s implementation of temporary capacity limits earlier in the year to address operational challenges, including understaffing at the UK’s busiest airport. Emirates, which relies heavily on Heathrow as a key gateway from its Dubai hub, initially threatened not to comply with the restrictions but eventually reduce capacity on Dubai-London Gatwick.

Clark has also criticized Heathrow’s owners for insufficient investment during the pandemic, arguing that maintained staffing levels despite financial losses. He has called for a new CEO who can rebuild relationships with investors and airlines.

In response, Heathrow stated that its actions were necessary to protect consumer service and highlighted maintaining high service standards. The ongoing tensions underscore broader concerns about the airport’s operational strategy and its impact on major international carriers.
